Reporting to the Director of Safety, the Safety Specialist is responsible primarily for the review and coaching of the Samsara driver camera events, for the task level oversight of the driving workforce, with a focus on onboarding, orientation, and training. Additional responsibilities include involvement with regulatory and policy compliance. Works with management and internal departments to minimize occupational health and safety risks and manage compliance with applicable regulations.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Review and coaching of events on Samsara
- Responsible for training new drivers, existing drivers, and driver mentors to include orientation, onboarding, and continuing employee engagement.
- Provide supplemental remedial training to drivers when warranted
- Ride in a tractor-trailer combination (single or double) in urban, suburban, and rural areas and in all types of weather conditions, either as a driver/operator or as a passenger in a training capacity
- Responsible for training on regulatory compliance issues
- Responsible for providing training to prevent accidents and injuries
- Responsible for verifying that all required training has taken place and assesses the need for additional training
- Responsible for working with and monitoring safety committees
- Responsible for performing preventative activities such as check rides, performing collision and injury review, implementing behavioral safety process in Service Center, performing driver observations, conducting data analysis, and developing programs on a case by case basis for preventative measures
- Perform inclement weather observations to determine whether or not it is safe to place drivers on the road
- Perform duties to maintain compliance with state and federal regulations such as performing skills
- Test for new drivers, monitoring the log process for Pick Up and Delivery (PandD) and Linehaul drivers, creating HazMat reports (e.g DOT 58), and overseeing HazMat disposal
- Responsible for overseeing security/ Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) audits
- Follow up with drivers on tickets and suspensions
- Responsible the recognition process and available to drivers and other associates as needed
- Perform data collection, and is responsible for updating spreadsheets and records with the applicable information
- Consult with managers on special projects and is responsible for attending customer visits and maintaining positive customer relations
- Responsible for attending development training on a regular basis
- Responsible for deciding whether to call an adjuster to the scene, as well as whether or not to call a vendor to a Hazmat cleanup
- Responsible for interacting with all field associates, to include leadership on a regular basis
- Interact with adjusters, law enforcement or other state agencies, and state trucking associations on a regular basis
Qualifications:
- A related degree or comparable formal training, certification, or work experience
- 3+ years of experience in a transportation safety-related position
- Experience with presentations and presenting to cross-functional teams
- Advanced knowledge of federal / state motor carrier regulations, including OSHA, DOT, state, and EPA
- Strong verbal / written communication skills
- Intermediate PC skills, including MS Office
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and shift focus between tasks; attention to detail
- Function in a fast-paced environment
- Travel 10% of the time
- Ability to work extended hours as needed, including occasional evenings and weekends
